PAST
Ziquan Wang: Psycho Path
Ziquan Wang’s first institutional solo exhibition “Psycho Path” is on view at Qiao Space from 8 November,2023 to 28 January, 2024.
Ziquan Wang has always observed our daily life with a unique way, from the drone vision in “Creatures of the Air”to the un-rendered interfaces shown in his “Shadow Pandemic”and other images. Constantly showing the possibilities of observation under new technologies. In “Psycho Path,” Wang attempts to erase the skin and restore the original appearance of the inside of our bodies. This “erasing” is not only about X-ray imaging, it is the erasure of the final layer of painting, but also an exploration of the nerves and the screen, the skin.
“Inside a dream from long ago, my skin was dry and cracked into chunks that kept falling to the floor like breadcrumbs. I rushed into the shower, and those furrows of skin were filled with falling drops of water, temporarily stopping the cracking, but this resulted in my needing to stand underneath the shower head the whole time I was being rinsed. Many strangers crowded the bathroom, ogling me through the glass and discussing my illness. This dream was so odd, the bathroom was as big as a living room and I was standing right in the middle of it. I tried to slightly avoid the group, but as soon as my body veered away from the water that was drenching me, my skin would start peeling off again, and I struggled to shrink myself so that every inch of my skin could be drenched. Just like that, the doctor’s prescription for me: always stand under the shower head.”
ARTIST
Ziquan Wang currently lives and works in Shanghai. He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (China) with a B.A. degree in sculpture in 2017 and from the Royal College of Art with an M.A. degree in 2019. Wang’s practice is rooted in his unique observation and understanding of the Internet and the virtual world, exploring the threshold values between virtuality and reality, and using 3D software to imitate the absurdity in the physical world.
