PAST
Stuart Middleton Solo Exhibition
Qiao Space, in conjunction with Condo Shanghai 2019, Carlos/Ishikawa, is presenting four works by Stuart Middleton – all stop frame animations, which the artist has completed over the past 3 years in Shanghai from July13th to Oct 13th . Soundscaping is an important element in this exhibition. The four works are tied together by the artist’s careful control of sound; He creates the entire folio for each film by recording sounds made with his own body, hands, and mouth.
ARTIST
Stuart Middleton (b. 1987, Crewe, UK) studied at Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main, Germany after graduating Camberwell College of Art, London (BA) in 2009. He now lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland.
Stuart Middleton’s practice involves drawing, painting, sculpture, text and animation. His work often reflects upon the body as a space in which internalised fantasies and public relations coalesce. Middleton examines how fictions enter popular culture as tools used to underpin social divisions. He is interested in the coercive nature of metaphors; asking under what conditions do they originate, and what roles do they play in the entrenchment of identities.
