Art Patrons
Qiao Space and Shanghai Oil Tank Art Center are proud to announce that we will bring a large-scale exhibition “Art Patrons” on March 24, 2018. The 36 “patrons of art” participating in the exhibition are all role models of Chinese collectors, and they are recording and creating history in their own way. As an important link in the art ecology, “art patrons” have not been closely followed and systematically sorted out in China. This exhibition will take the lead in opening and linking various dimensions of this topic, creating a platform for communication, dialogue and concentrated presentation.
The year 2008 was a turning point in the world’s politics and economy. In the ten years since the “post-Olympic Games”, China’s economic aggregate has leapt to the second place in the world, and the group of Chinese contemporary art collectors has also risen rapidly, attracting the attention of the international art field. In addition to the status of “collectors”, they gradually play more diverse roles and take on more public missions – not only collecting art, but also promoting art education by establishing art galleries, art spaces, foundations and expositions Active and diverse ways to support contemporary art, such as exhibition projects and institutional development, have become an important force leading social and cultural construction. In this context, the “Patron of Art” exhibition is at the right time, because the height of a country’s growth is not only determined by its material civilization, but also depends on the breadth and depth of national thought-the power of art will also be highlighted here.
This exhibition will also explore the behavior of “art patronage”, which is full of historical significance. Whether in ancient China, Renaissance Italy, or 20th-century America, patrons of the arts with their individuality and vision have played a pivotal role in history. How art collectors interact and achieve with artists, and how they form their own unique tastes by supporting artists’ creations is a complex and fascinating process.
The exhibition “Patrons of Art” will present the recent collections of 36 important Chinese contemporary collectors with a total of more than 50 pieces. From this perspective, it will show the current situation of Chinese contemporary art collectors and the appearance of global contemporary art.
